July 5th is the kick off day for the first YSEL camp in Ethiopia. Prior to that, Tom Toomey, the YSEL Camp Director, and Endlkachew Tesera, the YSEL Assistant Director, traveled throughout Ethiopia interviewing the 128 semi-finalists. They traveled to Dire Dawa, Harar, Bahir Dar, Gambela, and Debre Zeyit to interview 98 students face to face. They found it hard to find only 44 finalists out of so many motivated and talented students. "Ethiopia is a very unique and diverse country," noted Tom, "It is so rich in culture and history.
I'm excited to start camp and bring students together from the 11 different regions of Ethiopia."
One of the highlights of their interview traveling was feeding hyenas in Harar! It was a bit intense being that close to the animal with the second most powerful jaws in the animal kingdom, but when in Harar that is the big attraction!
