BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ The YSEL Spelling Bee

Last Wednesday was the first of four competitions among the houses—the YSEL Spelling Bee.  Two members of each house competed in the bee, with words generated from those learned in their classes.  Over 50 words were chosen and the members of each house did their best to out spell each other.  When all the selected words were exhausted, the panel of judges had remaining students spell US state names.  After Beza Mamuye of the “11Genuises” house was eliminated on the word “binoculars” (she forgot the “s”), Michael Fantahun (Habeshas) and Sintayehu Wakuma (Fantastic 12) were locked in a volley of state names: Minnesota, Mississippi, Alabama, Nevada, California.  The bee was almost over with Hawaii, but neither could spell the Aloha state.  In the end, Michael won the bee with the Bay state—Massachusetts.  Congratulations to Michael and the Habeshas!  This Wednesday houses will compete in the Debate competition. Other competitions include Public Speaking and last but not least, the Geography Bee.  Stay tuned!
